5 Positive Steps To Manage Your Mental Health

In our high paced techy world, it is easy to neglect your mental health. While most of us are aware of the importance of our physical health, you can forget to manage your mental health. According to a health report by WHO, one in four people in the world will be affected by mental or neurological disorders at some point in their lives

We live in a haze of activity. Sometimes the state of our mind and how we feel is pushed to the bottom of our to-do list.

But there are positive ways in which you can manage your mental health. By adopting one or two of these practices into your life, you can help your overall mental health. A healthy mind with a healthy body can help you work towards a balanced life.

#Step 1 — Embrace Your Mental Health

For far too long, mental health has been a taboo subject for many people. Thankfully, the last few years has seen many celebrities, sportspeople, Danny Rose, and even members of the British Royal Family, such as Prince Harry, start to talk about mental health.

If the subject of mental health has made you uncomfortable in the past, now is the time to start thinking in a different way and embrace it. Open yourself up to all its possibilities and if you need to talk to somebody, do it.

At last, the stigma concerning mental health issues is evaporating. It is not a sign of weakness that you feel the need to speak to somebody. It is quite the opposite; it is a positive sign that you have ownership of yourself and want to be the best you possibly can.

#Step 2 — If You Need Help, Seek It From A Professional

Take the positive step forward. If you are feeling out of sorts and cannot seem to make head-or-tail about the way you think, make the positive step to contact somebody.

This situation is the same for anybody at any stage in their lives. Some of us could have the most supportive family and friends in the world, but sometimes it is hard to share your darkest, most profound thoughts.

#Step 3 — Manage Your Mental Health By Giving Yourself Quality Time

Make a conscious effort to do something weekly that puts the focus on improving your mental health. It can be anything that gives you a time-out from your day and puts you into a positive state of mind.

  • Talk to somebody about your concerns or any nagging doubts in your head.
  • Meditate for 5 mins and build it up each week.
  • Exercise for a solid 30 mins and clear your mind.
  • Do something that completely relaxes you. e.g. have a massage, watch a favourite film, etc.

This designated time is for you and nobody else.

Once you start doing something like this once a week, work on adding a bit of “you” time to every day of your week. Notice the positive difference in your attitude and energy.

# Step 4 — What Are You Putting In Your Body?

It is not just our negative thoughts that can affect our mental health. There is also a strong connection between our diet and our mental health. Stop for a second and think about your diet. What do you eat every day? What are you putting in your body?

There have been many studies to check the connection between your diet and your mental health. A trial by Natalie Parletta and colleagues found that if they supplemented a Mediterranean diet with fish oil, it helped to improve the mental health of people with depression.

So, next time you go to the supermarket, think about shopping not for your body but your mind as well. It only needs to be a few tweaks here and there to your diet to make a massive difference to your mental health.

#Step 5 — Sleep More

The theme for the Mental Health Awareness Week 18th-24th May 2020, hosted by the Mental Health Foundation is “sleep” and how the lack of sleep can affect your mental health. According to Mark Rowland, the Chief Executive of the Foundation, “Sleep is the unsung hero of our mental health”.

The National Sleep Foundation recommends the following sleep times for your health, performance and safety, depending on how old you are. However, everybody is different. The best way to find your optimum amount of sleep is to try sleeping for different amounts of time. Find out which length is best for you and start making sure you get enough sleep.

If you feel tired during the day, it could be an indicator that you need to sleep more. Listen to your body and help your mind by having some more shuteye during the night.


Taking control of your mental health can be liberating, giving you the confidence and energy to push yourself further every day. Try incorporating these steps into your life and enjoy the real benefits to your mental health.
